It's never too late...
to fold a towel!
When I started writing my little posts here sometime in the latter half of last year, I promised myself that I would be consistent and pop a post on here on a regular basis. Being super keen to start with, I was thinking a weekly post, but I soon realised that I was going to run out of anything worthwhile to say by the end of month one and that I should spend time instead finishing The Book. So, I turned weekly to monthly and that worked for a while and then ‘the return of the husband’ happened and writing sort of went out of the window. I was occupied with wifely duties, like looking for his glasses which he loses up-teen times a day, boiling the kettle to make tea and returning his shoes to the shoe rack. Since when has it been ok to just leave them where ever you take them off. Everyone knows, don’t they, that shoes come off once you walk through the front door and you place them neatly on a shoe rack? Being back together 24/7 has been a wake up call. For nearly twelve years we have spent more time apart due to him working away than together. I’ve lived a life where the towels are neatly folded on the heated towel rail and my prescribed medication (which seems to be increasing every year that I get older ) is stored away in a Tupperware container and out of view. He, bless him, has lived a life where damp towels live on floors and are picked up by the Premier Inn cleaning team and strips of blister packs litter desks, bedside tables and bathroom shelves. I’ve tried giving him his own medication Tupperware box but to date, he hasn’t used it and I don’t want to appear naggy by insisting he uses it. I’m already venturing into the realms of nagging territory, somewhere I don’t want to go, but seriously, how hard is it to fold a towel!
My darling Mr R. A messy sod, but he’s my messy sod!
So, anyway, apart from turning into a nagging Stepford Wife (is that even possible?) I’ve been busy-ish and writing has taken a back step. It was when I received a third reminder from an Australian penfriend that I owed her a letter that I knew I had to get back into the writing saddle. Truth is that once I get my arse into gear and start writing , I really enjoy it, even if I’m not very good at it. It’s the getting started that’s hard. I’ve also been inspired to tackle more editing of The Book especially after finishing The One Before The One by Emma Cooper who is one of my very favourite writers and who is a great inspiration to me. She also acknowledged me in one of her books. I told her about a nose issue I once had. You’ll just have to read her books to find out the connection!
I have my writing mojo back…hurrah! My penfriend has finally had a very, very long letter from me with four months of new and a zillion photos attached. I’m hoping that she takes time to digest it before replying. I need a few months to make sure that I have news to write about!
And here I am writing a Substack post and looking forward to writing another one. I already know what it will be about.
So, I’m going to stop here and take his nibs a cup of tea in bed, fold a towel or two and straighten up shoes before. Later today we are off to our favourite eating and drinking spot in Penzance because they have a margarita day and you can buy two for £15 all day. And the sun is shining so get a shift on!
I’ll be back soon. Promise!

Funny ! You should come on the creative writing course I’m cohosting in June with Jaqui Burns! You might enjoy it!
